The Ontological Preserves were established following the Null-Fracture Insurrections as a metaphysical compromise between the ruling powers of Nexus Prime and the philosophical reality of persistent null-fractures. The Axiom Array — a massive reality-stabilization engine deployed at the Chaos Wars' climax — successfully contained the largest null-fracture zones but could not eliminate them. The compromise that followed: rather than continue the failing project of elimination, the authorities designated the anomaly zones as "Preserves" where reality's laws were formally permitted to fluctuate within controlled parameters.
In the current era, the Preserves have evolved well beyond their containment origins. They are research facilities for ontological engineering, sites of philosophical and spiritual significance for multiple cults, and in several cases, the only livable environments for entities whose biology or consciousness architecture requires non-standard physics to function. The 340 confirmed permanent residents of the Preserve network are not prisoners. They are residents. SITE DESCRIPTION
The Glass Desert is a region where probability itself has crystallized, with all possible outcomes occurring simultaneously in transparent, overlapping layers of reality. Unlike a probability cascade event — which is temporary and chaotic — the Glass Desert is permanent and perfectly still. Every possible version of everything that has ever existed or could have existed within the zone occupies the same space simultaneously, rendered in transparent overlapping strata like a geological cross-section of possibility. Visitors report seeing every version of every building that was ever built, demolished, or never constructed — all equally present, all translucent.
The ground is firm but visually shows every possible surface it could be simultaneously. Sound within the zone reflects all possible acoustic versions at once, creating a layered murmur of every conversation that ever occurred or could have occurred. Extended presence causes identity dissolution as the observer begins perceiving all possible versions of themselves — all equally present, all equally real, all equally them. The Perpendicular Moment is Nexus Prime's most notorious temporal anomaly — a time-fracture created during the Null-Fracture Insurrections where a single instant repeats eternally, its inhabitants forever locked in an endless now. It is a legacy of the Axiom Array deployment: the Array successfully contained the null-fracture zones but could not eliminate them entirely, and at this site, containment created something the Array's designers did not anticipate. The moment did not stop. It folded back on itself, perfectly, infinitely.
The phenomenon is not a loop in the conventional sense. The affected individuals within it do not experience the repetition. They experience the same moment, infinitely, with no subjective awareness of repetition. From outside, observers see them cycling through the same microsecond endlessly — the same gesture, the same expression, the same syllable, forever. Zero entropy within the zone: physical matter is perfectly preserved across every cycle. Attempts to enter the zone and retrieve individuals have universally failed. Null-Void Territories are regions where null-fractures were imperfectly contained following the Omnisynthetic Wars, leaving areas that exist in states of semi-reality — physical and metaphysical laws in constant fluctuation. They are neither fully real nor fully void, occupying an intermediate ontological state that defies conventional classification. In a Null-Void Territory, the laws of physics apply inconsistently: gravity may function normally in some sub-zones and fail entirely in others. Causality is unreliable. Matter exists in probabilistic states that shift without external trigger. The ontological status of objects within the zone changes moment to moment without observable cause.
Entities native to Null-Void Territories have adapted to function within the fluctuation — some have developed entirely novel forms of cognition premised on ontological instability as a baseline. These entities do not experience the fluctuation as anomalous. For them, the inconsistency is the ground state of existence, and conventional physical law would be the anomaly. Several of these entities have applied for, and received, Preserve residency status. Their applications noted that the Preserve was the only place in Nexus Prime where they could exist without constant cognitive adaptation to imposed physical consistency. The applications were processed under standard residential framework. This framework did not anticipate this category of applicant.
